Ayurvedic Summer Survival Pack

So, it is summer time.

Yes! Warm water, balmy nights, frangipani’s flowering, mangoes, papaya’s, stone fruits, berries… all the tropical goodies we love about summer!

Summer is a time of year where the ‘fire’ element, known in Ayurvedic medicine as the ‘Pitta’ dosha, is predominant. In Ayurveda, like increases like, so when the outside environment is high in the fire element, the internal environment of our body, mind and spirit can tend to feel rather fiery also. It is a wonderful thing, the way nature looks after us and the way our bodies naturally adapt to external seasonal changes.

The fire element, when out of balance can show up in our physical body through experiencing symptoms such as; indigestion, reflux, ulcers, acidity, anxiety, anger, frustration, short-temperedness, obsessiveness and a ravenous insatiable appetite.

When the fire element is in balance, we can experience the following; a good healthy appetite (agni, digestive fire), creative sparks of genius, ability to have a clear and steady focus, humorous and witty, cracking very good jokes, energy to run, swim, surf, dance, go for long walks and being one of the greatest people people could come to for advice on important personal matters.

Balancing your beautiful fire is easy and will keep you creatively dancing in the sunshine all summer long! 

Here is my Summer Survival Pack for you:

1. Be cool, get earthed: Wake up in the morning, go outside, take your shoes off and allow the souls of your feet to walk on a patch of fresh dewy cool green grass. Do this for 10 minutes, standing/earthing on the grass and walking on the grass. Why? The souls of our feet are a key area where excess ‘heat’ in the body has an opportunity to leave. The coolness of fresh morning grass under the feet has a very balancing effect on Pitta, the fire element and is known to cool the body as well as heal eyesight issues – as an excess of heat in the body can cause early deterioration of the eyes, as the eyes are governed by the fire element. Walking barefoot on the grass feels amazing plus the benefits of earthing the body through simply being barefoot is wonderful for releasing electromagnetic radiation from the body, grounding the nervous system and tapping back into natures healing wisdom!

2. Drink plenty of (warm) water: This probably sounds contradictory to most theories on how to ‘stay cool’ in warm weather. For most, drinking chilled drinks and cold water from the fridge, is a common tactic to try and cool the body down. Drinking cold drinks, and eating cold foods, however does the exact opposite to what you may think. Why? When we drink a cold drink, the body has to work harder – using more energy (that it could otherwise be using to keep you cool) in order to heat up the drink to your body temperature. When you drink a warm drink or room temperature drink (which is body temperature), your body doesn’t need to work on heating the it up – it doesn’t need to exert hardly any energy in order to transport the fluid to your cells, where it needs to go. This doesn’t mean you need to be sipping on a scorching herbal tea all day long in summer. Simply opt for room temperature water or warmed water, and yes, drinking herbal teas will be great – if you can get your head around it. When we are hot, the body cools down by sweating. This is where our bodies energy goes too – making us sweat. Through drinking a hot cuppa, herbal tea or simply warm water, the heat from the drink, naturally helps us to sweat, once again, allowing the body to ‘chill’ out – which is what we want! Try this, it really is yummy to drink warm things in hot weather. The ancient’s have known this and been doing this for years!

3. Keep your skin well ‘oiled’: Cold pressed black sesame oil, pure shea butter, almond oil, coconut oil even olive oil. The point here is to make sure your skin is being nourished and fed during the whole year – and specifcally, to protect and look after your skin in the summer months. (Note* winter time it is just as important to keep well oiled as the air is dry.) One of the best ways to keep well oiled is to moisturise and re-hydrate your skin in the evening before bed. Doing this before bed is great as the oils will have a chance to absorb into the skin while you sleep, creating protection for the next day. Using sunscreens, if they are 100% certified organic and contain no nasties such as titanium dioxide, can be great and a very smart move if spending an extended amount of time in the sun and out in the elements. Protecting the skin with sunscreen is one thing. Protecting the skin, through nourishing the skin from the inside out – is another complimentary approach, which makes so much sense to me. Why? The skin is the largest organ in the body. It is sensitive, even if you have olive or tanned skin naturally, your skin is still sensitive and needs loving care. When we nourish the skin by massaging good oils into it such as those mentioned above, we are feeding the skin with nutrients and a barrier that it can then have on a deep level under the surface. This means that when we do expose our skin to the sun, the goodness of the shea butter or sesame oil for example is there as a layer of protection from the inside, against skin damage and burn. Many surfers do this – they use shea butter as a natural sunscreen and condition their skin regularly with nourishing oils as mentioned, in order to keep their skin hydrated and resilient agains the elements. The secret here, is to nourish/oil your skin regularly so that your skin already has the oils in it for when you do go outside and bask in the sunlight.

So, now that your cool, hydrated and glowing from the inside – out, you are ready for a blissful summer of adequate rest, proper nourishment, deep peace and wild creativity!

If you start to feel a little ‘fiery’, it simply means your fire needs some balancing. Walk on some grass, drink some warm water, give your body a massage, sip on a coconut, take 3 deep breaths, swim in some fresh water and remember this… “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” Our bodies will do what they do and we will feel what we feel. That is nature and it has its own divine intelligence. We can learn how to balance and align ourselves, however, through simple daily routines and lifestyle habits that may seem small, yet really do  make a big difference!

We had a Christmas morning brunch at our house, buckwheat pancakes that were gluten-free & egg-free (recipe coming in my new book coming soon!), with a spread of luscious summer fruits that are in season!  The meal was delish – as was the fresh water swim in our local water hole after.

The most nourishing part of Christmas however was the precious time spent relaxing and blissing out in the summer sunshine with family! 

So much love and endless gratitude from my heart.

Vatta Balancing for the Festive Season

W-o-w-e-e-e ! :)

This is my official way of saying, ‘wholly molly, we are almost at the end of this calendar year- 2014’!

The spring air is warm and strong northerly winds are blowing out all the cobwebs from Winter. There is movement.

Jacarandas blossoming, animals coming out of hibernation to bask in the sun, frangipani shoots sprouting! Spring is certainly in full swing here in Australia.

Similarly,  the air is crisp and fresh, evenings are cool and the flowers are tucking themselves into bed for the winter in the northern hemisphere. (I have family in Canada who give me this inside info!) :-)

There is seasonal change happening everywhere! :) And it’s a glorious thing! Without these changes and cycles, we would not experience the richness and beauty that Mother Nature has to offer in all of her forms and expressions.

Vatta, the element of Air + Ether is present during seasonal change as well as times of the year where there is more activity happening – such as the holiday season.

In my personal experience and observation, seasonal change combined with the busyness leading up to Christmas/New Years can have us feeling:

‘Crazy, frantic, hurried, rushed, and scattered!’

We move fast to get things done, resulting in being short tempered and feisty when things get out of control.

Self-care, proper nourishment, meditation practice, time for rest and proper sleep are all things that can very easily slip by the wayside when there is so much to do and so much happening.

It’s tough to keep the balance!

Ironically, these are the very things we need to be doing – more than ever!

This time of year it is important to ~ ‘slow down’…

These might seem like ghastly words to hear – when your social calendar is filled every weekend until Christmas and your diary is bursting with ‘to do’ lists that scream at you every day.

Trust me on this one though…

Taking a moment to apply some ‘slow down’ to your day, will have you feeling more like this:

Energised, calm, centered, empowered and on-top of it all! You’ll stand out at the Christmas parties, as people will notice that you did something different this year. You don’t look frazzled. You are poised and calm, centered and glowing. You are radiantly grinning and proud of yourself for being peacefully productive this ‘silly’ season. :)

In Ayurvedic medicine, health is all about balance. Any type of change we experience – such as the change of season or a busy period in life can aggravate the ‘Air’ element of the body, known as Vatta Dosha. Vata loves regularity, stillness and warmth. When the weather is windy, irregular, too hot or too cold and dry – Vatta can get upset and start to run a muck! The busyness of this time of year can throw this element out of whack. The good news is that it’s easily balanced and corrected;

~5 Simple Vatta Balancing Lifestyle Tips~

1. Drink Warm Water & Nourish Yourself:

Wake up and drink 2-4 cups of freshly boiled warm water with a slice of fresh ginger. This will warm your digestion and activate your parasympathetic nervous system, allowing you to start your day in a relaxed way. It’s the best!

Make sure you take some time to nourish your body. Start the day with a yummy grounding porridge, buckwheat pancakes or veggie soup! Look after your precious body on the inside and out.

2. Stretch/Move Your Body Daily:

In your room or lounge-room, move your body. Raise your arms up above your head and reach to the heavens.  Stretch your body, breathing with your movement, becoming one with your body :).  Move, unwind, and tune in. Do this for a minimum of 10 minutes. Stretching opens the body and allows us to be in tune and feel good in our skin. Movement releases endorphins (happy chemicals) in the brain, making you feel good. After moving the body it is much easier to sit in stillness and focus within to de-stress through meditation.

3. Meditate/Sit and Be with Your-self:

Find a comfy cushion, bolster, blanket or towel to sit on. Sit on the edge so that your knees are lower than your hips. If you are new to the concept of meditation, don’t worry. Everyone starts somewhere and now is the perfect time to begin. Sit with your spine straight to allow for proper flow of energy, then close down your eyes and simply focus on your breath. Allow thoughts to come and go. They are not important here. All that is important is your breath, and your focus inward. If you can do this for at least 10 min at the start of your day, it will set the scene for a peacefully productive day ahead. Meditation is transformational.

4. Massage Your Feet/Body 3 times per week:

Cold pressed Black sesame oil is traditionally the Ayurvedic oil of choice. If you don’t have it though, you can use organic cold pressed olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil. To prepare the oil for your self-massage, simply warm your oil by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. Before you have your shower, massage the oil into your body. Oil is beautifully grounding and balancing. Your skin will eat it up and your nerves will too. Do this for 5 minutes then rinse off in a warm shower.

5. Take Some Deep Breathes:

Before you go out for the day and get into your work or your tasks… take 6 deep breathes. Write a note to yourself in your diary to remind you to move slowly. Remember that you don’t need to be superman or superwoman. You simply need to do your best and do everything with love. If there are things on your to do list that are not high priorities, then cross them off. Free up your time so you can focus on a realistic list of things to achieve. This is a hard one for the high achievers. You can do it though. :) There are 12 months next year to complete those tasks. Remember, there is no rush, everything in life happens in divine timing.

This season is all about looking after YOU – so that you can show up being present, clear and loving with your friends and family.

After all this is what is most important. Not how much we did, but how present we were.

Ayurvedic Adzuki Quinoa Protein Bowl Recipe

This dish is a simple and delicious vegetarian double protein meal that is light, nourishing and grounding for the digestion. Perfect for Spring, when fasting on soups might be getting a bit boring. Do not fear. Adzuki Protein bowl is here to the rescue!

The secret to making this dish easy to put together is to have the Adzuki and Quinoa pre-cooked.

Adzuki beans take longer than most other pulses that I use in my cooking. They are so lovely as a change of ‘food’ scenery and are well worth the extra effort.

To save time:

  • Boil your Adzuki beans in hot water on a medium heat the night before. Allow approx 1-2 hours of cooking time. Every batch of Adzuki will be different. Some take more or less time to cook. Once you have them cooked. Time to cook your Quinoa. 
  • Rince your Quinoa then place in your pot. For every cup of Quinoa, add approx 2 cups of boiling water. Once you add the water, do not touch. No need to stir. Let the Quinoa steam the same way you would cook rice. Check from time to time and add more water if you see it is necessary. Now that your beans and Quinoa is cooked. The rest is a piece of cake! 

Serves approx 2 – 2.5 people :) :

Organic Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of cooked Adzuki beans
  • 1 cup of cooked Quinoa; white, red, black or mixed
  • Fresh Ginger
  • Spices: Tumeric, Coriander, Cummin
  • Ghee or Coconut oil
  • Fresh Coriander
  • Unhulled Tahini
  • Avocado
  • Celtic sea salt + Black pepper
  • Boiling water
  • Love! (Magic ingredient)

Creation process: 

  1. In your pot add 1-2 tbsp’s of Ghee or Coconut oil.
  2. Add 1/2 tsp of Coriander seeds, 1/2 tsp Cummin seeds and 1 tsp of fresh ginger. Toast these spices together, allowing them to sizzle and expand, then add 1/2 tsp of Tumeric powder and stir. (Onion and Garlic can be added here also/optional).
  3. Now add your pre-cooked Adzuki beans and stir.
  4. Add your Quinoa and mix the beans and Quinoa together, allowing the spices to absorb and soak in. Will be smelling really good by now!
  5. Add a pinch of salt and a few cracks of black pepper.
  6. Your dish is ready to be served. I know… could a dish that is so good, really be so easy!? …In this case, yes. :)
  7. Serve in your bowl of choice. Add a drizzle of tahini with a spoon, then a hearty pinch of freshly chopped Coriander. Slice your Avo in half, then into quarters and scoop the fruit out or leave it in its shell for a more ‘rustic’ presentation.
  8. Now, enjoy! Congratulations on preparing a hearty, nourishing, soulful dish that your body and mind will love!

Song of the Soul – Yogi Musings

For years the practice of Yoga has captured the imagination of both my body, mind and spirit.

There is something special that happens when the breath harmonises in movement with the body. When the mind is freed through the practice of letting go of being right, doing something right, looking right or having to prove something to anyone else.

Finding yourself in the moment. In the here and now. Being humble.

One breath at a time. One movement at a time. One thought at a time… 

I call this P R E S E N C E .

There is a rich beauty about realising – (through showing up on the mat, in life, in your relationships, in your work) that even once you ‘know’ how to do something, a downward-faceing dog, achieve an outcome or a result in your work or know that making sure you are present with your family or partner is important… There is a beauty in realising that even though you may KNOW these things…. that knowing things doesn’t make a difference.

It is our PRESENCE. Our attention to the moment. To our yoga practice each day. To our bodies each day. To our work each day. To our loved ones each day. To ourselves each day. It is this that I call the real practice of YOGA, (union). 

Each time you step onto your mat, arrive at work or come home to be with your family, that is where the real YOGA, the real joy in being alive, the real magic, the real practice is in action. 

I love the subtle resistance that can arise sometimes when I step onto my yoga mat. The intelligence of my body humbling me to see and feel what would have otherwise remained un-touched and un-noticed. I love the intimacy with self that my Yoga practice brings. The inner dance of my cells as I move across my mat. As I am guided by my teacher to explore new oceans and lands within my body.

Being present and aware of the imperfections within my practice is what makes my Yoga practice feel complete. This is the beauty. This is the life juice. This is where the joy and adventure of being alive lives!

Resistance in life can be a stifling feeling. It can stop us – often at times when we need to break-through the most.

Resistance is a sign that what you truly love and desire is close. Very close. Infact, most likely just behind the corner of the barrier you are putting up.

Resistance is a gift. It is a blessings and when you can walk through those thoughts, those blockages in your body, those aches and pains in your being that wish for you to stay safe and not feel the very juicy goodness that your spirit wishes you to feel, then there is a sweet prize for you at the end. A prize that cannot be valued through money, fame or riches. It is the ultimate gift…

I N N E R – F R E E D O M .

You can experience this in your lifetime. We can all travel through the doorways of our resistance, whether it be around our health and body image, breaking through our physical pain, our emotional blockages and aches or a breakthrough in showing up to be present in our own lives, to receive that which is waiting for us, to be our true authentic selves, allowing all story, past beliefs and thoughts that do not serve us to drop away. 

Life really is a practice. A yoga practice is a mini microcosm of the bigger macrocosm of our journey. Our work is a microcosm of our practice. Our relationships are a microcosm of our practice.

The practice is within. It lies with us. We are the ones, that we have been waiting for in our lives. It is you. It is me. It is all of us, showing up, with humility, with openness to grow and learn. With self-compassion and love. Knowing that we are on a journey. And as cliche` as this sounds, life really is about the journey, NOT the destination…

At the end of our sweet lifetime on this earth. It is not how ‘perfect’ we were at our head-stand in yoga or how ‘perfect’ we were in our lives that we will reflect upon and value. It is how loving we were – firstly to ourselves, and then with others – it is this that we shall look back on and smile about. The journey – the practice – the memories of how we broke through our resistance in that area or that area… with this person or that person… with ourselves. Being the best person we can be in this life. THIS is what we shall be proud of. THIS is THE PRACTICE. 

This entire post was inspired by reading a gorgeous poem out of BKS Iyengers’ famous book, ‘Light on Yoga’.

Here is an exert that I wish to share… This poem is divine in every way imaginable. It encapsulates such beauty and the true essence of YOGA from my point of view. For those who don’t call themselves ‘Yogi’s’… Yoga means life. As in each moment we are uniting with the forces of nature, of the energies within our own being… You don’t need to show up at 6am to your local yoga studio to call yourself a Yogi. Living in harmony daily with self and others – being open to grow and courageous to meet yourself in each moment with self compassion and self love. This is my definition of a true Yogi. The Yoga is within.

Our 2nd Birthday – Thank You! :)

Two years of wholesome loving goodness creations and we are celebrating from across the seas in Canada! Yippee!

Two years ago on this date WLG was born, out of a love and inspiration for sharing the beauty and magic of real – wholefood – organics – Ayurvedic medicine and wholesome nourishment with kitchens and families around the world!

…The amount of beauty, inspiration, joy, amazing new friends, connections, inspiration, wholesomeness, love, goodness, fun and creativity that has come about over the last 2 years has been INCREDIBLE and so nourishing on every level! Whoa!!

Filled with gratitude today and everyday for this community and for all the friends near and far who have supported this creation and it’s organic growth since the beginning!

Sunrise & Canada!

Seeing the sunrise is something special. That is even an understatement.

It is D I V I N E!

Every day the sun appears. If your in the southern hemisphere it rises over the ocean.

If you are in the northern hemisphere then it sets over the Ocean.

Both spectacular sights to witness and allow to flood the cells of your body!

For the next six weeks these eyes will be viewing the sun from North America as we set off on an adventure to the land of wild chip-munks, squirrels, skunks and blossoming summertime flowers! Relaxing time with family, nature time during the Canadian summer and Wholesome Loving Goodness’s first ever North American tour – holding 4 Ayurvedic Wholefood Cooking Classes in the first week of August 2014 in Toronto and London, Ontario. Warm, nourish, soften, mmm – Let’s talk ‘Ayurvedic Daily Routine’

Let’s cut straight to the chase, to the juicy business of our day to day living.

Your body is a temple. It is sacred.

For your body, mind and spirit to function optimally, it must be cared for, loved, nourished nurtured and respected with consistency and regularity. Your body is relying on you to look after it. It will even talk to you when it is out of balance, to get your attention and make you stop, slow down, rest, have a cry of release and realise where you are really at.

In essence, you are a miracle and your body is the magical vessel that you have to express, shine, dance, sing, play, connect and experience the world and inter-react with.

In honour of your divine body, of all bodies, your incredible organs and wondrous nervous system that communicates and allows all actions, thoughts, movement, digestion, creativity, love and magic to take place within you ~ Ayurveda has some tips for us!

The ‘Daily Routine’ is a key ingredient in creating harmony, balance and wellness internally and externally.

I love these simple practices that slow the mind down, soothe the soul, nourish the body, mind and spirit on the deepest levels and provide an opportunity to connect within on a daily basis.

If you can only start with adding 1 of these 5 practices into you day to begin with, that will make a big difference in itself!

Without further ado… Let’s get to it:

  1. Wake up, spit in the sink any gunk in your mouth, gently brush your teeth, scrape your tongue with a copper tongue scraper (copper conducts the toxins the best, or silver or gold). See here for Tongue Scraping Tutorial 
  2. Drink warm water with fresh ginger, lemon and honey (do not add honey if water is boiling, only when temp is warm). Or simply drink warm water to flush toxins, warm your digestive fire and hydrate your brain to start the day.
  3. Self massage with organic black sesame oil. Warm the oil and apply to your body before you shower in the morning. Focus on the joints, massage in a circular motion and move from your feet to your head. A great practice for improving circulation, boosting the immune system, cleansing the lymphatic system, soothing and grounding the nervous system, nourishing the bones and muscle tissue and loving your body first thing in the morning or before bed at night. Have a warm shower afterwards, the heat will open your pores and allow the oil to penetrate deeper into the tissues offering greater nourishment and goodness to your cells! Yum! So good in autumn and winter particularly! 
  4. Eat something warm for brekky! Warm, smooth, light and soupy… A rule in Ayurveda is to eat your biggest meal in the middle of the day when the sun is the highest- and to eat light and easy to digest foods for breakfast and dinner to assist your body and allow for optimum digestion.
  5. Massage your feet before bed with warm sesame oil to ground the nervous system and promote a very very deep and delicious sleep! …Also putting your legs up the wall, a yoga pose called the fountatin of youth or virparita karani that will nourish your adrenals and kidneys, restoring natural energy and allowing your body to balance and melt into a deep yummy sleep!

Well…. it is now the last day of Autumn.

What a beautiful season it has been!

Clear blue skies, sunny warm days, moody sunrises and expansive bursting sunsets… It has been, m a g i c a l !

Autumn is a season that assists with the transition between one extreme season to another. In Australia, the weather is pretty temperate all year round. Nonetheless, there is a big difference between the humid, balmy days of summer and the crisp, cool, fresh nights of winter.

Thank goodness for Autumn!

Without Autumn, we would be going from one very hot season to a very cold season (depending on where you are in the world), and this would come as a big shock to the body!

Mother nature is so intelligent and thoughtful… instead of giving us this extreme difference to adjust too, she gives us Autumn!

A season of transition.

As we transition through different seasons in the year, the body goes through subtle changes and shifts.

At the change of one season to another it’s a perfect time to give your digestive system a gentle cleanse.

A simple approach could be to simplify your meals for a week. Eat soup at night for 1 week instead of other heavier foods, to give your body a rest. Or if you are really keen, make a big batch of yummy Vegie soup and fast on that for 3-5 days depending on your body type to allow your organs to rest and rejuvenate in preparation for the coming season.

So, in thanking Autumn for her gentle beauty and gradual seasonal change from summer to winter… I have something special for you all!

Ayurvedic, nut-free Besan Bindi Balls!

Nut-free Ayurvedic ‘Spice Bliss Balls!’


Ingredients:

  • Ghee
  • Besan (chickpea) flour
  • Rice flour
  • Desiccated coconut
  • Sesame seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Dates
  • Coconut sugar
  • Ajwan seeds
  • Fennel seeds
  • LOVE!

Method:

  1. Add 1/2 cup of Ghee to a pan.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of Besan flour and stir… we want to toast the besan flour.
  3. Add 4 tablespoons of rice flour and stir.
  4. Toast the flour in the Ghee on medium heat for approx 10 minutes or until it smells and looks toasted/darker.
  5. In a separate pan dry toast 3 tbsp sesame seeds, 3 tbs sunflower seeds then pour into separate bowl.
  6. In the same pan, toast your spices. Add 3 tbsp of Ajwain seeds & 3 tbsp of Fennel seeds. Toast until ‘toasted’, they will smell toasted and look toasted. Add the spices to a mortar and pestle and grind into a powder.
  7. Chop 1 cup of dates into small pieces.
  8. Now add the dates, ground spice and seeds to the pan with Ghee and Besan flour and stir.
  9. Pour all ingredients into a mixing bowl, be careful, it will be hot still!
  10. In mixing bowl add 4tbsp of coconut sugar and mix in with the flour, dates, seeds etc.

Wait for the mixture to cool, then using your hands roll into small balls and they are ready!

If they are not sticking together properly, add a little extra Ghee to assist with binding.

Enjoy warm or place in the fridge to allow the Ghee to cool and the balls to go hard.

A traditional Ayurvedic treat, warm, toasty and spicy with just the right amount of sweet to cradle you from Autumn into Winter…!
